Burs

Dental burs are rotary cutting instruments used for cavity preparation, crown preps, finishing, oral surgery and removing old restorations.
What Are Dental Burs?
A dental bur attaches to a high-speed or slow-speed handpiece and cuts, shapes or polishes tooth structure and restorative materials. Burs are a daily consumable in general, restorative and surgical dentistry.
Carbide vs. Diamond Burs
Carbide burs have bladed heads that cut cleanly, which makes them well suited for excavating decay, cutting through metal and preparing cavities. Diamond burs grind rather than cut and are often used for crown preparations and finishing ceramics and composites.
Shank Types and Shapes
Friction grip (FG) burs fit high-speed handpieces, while right angle (RA) latch burs fit slow-speed contra-angles. Common shapes include round, pear, inverted cone and straight or tapered fissure, each designed for a specific step in the procedure.
