Matrix

Dental matrix systems help create tight contacts and natural contours when restoring teeth with composite or amalgam.
What Is a Dental Matrix?
A matrix is a thin band placed around a tooth to form a temporary wall during a filling. It holds the restorative material in place and shapes the contour and contact with the neighboring tooth.
Sectional vs. Circumferential Matrices
Sectional matrix systems use a contoured band held by a separating ring, which helps create tight, anatomically shaped contacts in Class II composites. Circumferential bands wrap around the whole tooth and are held by a retainer such as a Tofflemire.
Wedges and Accessories
Wedges seal the gingival margin and separate teeth slightly for a tighter contact. Wedge guards add a metal shield that protects the adjacent tooth during preparation.
